<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">With great relief, Canadian Friends of Peace Now welcomes the Israel security cabinet approval of a hostage-release-ceasefire deal, expected to receive
full government support later today.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br>
</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">The three-phased agreement promises to bring home all remaining hostages – alive or dead – who have been held in Gaza for 15 punishing months. In exchange,
Israel will release some 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, gradually withdraw its forces from Gaza, allow Gazans from the south to return to northern parts of the Strip, and enable a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br>
</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">This is momentous news for the hostages and their families, although along with the stories of loving embraces will come heart-rending ones about captives
who did not survive. Especially difficult will be the harrowing wait that families must endure for loved ones to be released later rather than sooner.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br>
</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">The deal is also a huge relief for the civilians of Gaza who have borne the brunt of a brutal war that created massive casualties, suffering and destruction.
Hopefully, the humanitarian aid will flow quickly and efficiently to reach those who need it most.</span></p>

</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">We rejoice with Israelis and Palestinians that this long delayed agreement is finally approved. But we know that much can still jeopardize its full implementation.
Both sides may seek to violate the terms and find excuses to resume the fighting. Especially worrisome are bellicose signals from hard right politicians Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, who have been dead set on total conquest of Gaza from day one.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br>
</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Even if this war truly ends, it is only a minimal first step towards a more peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians. Gaza will have to be stabilized
and rebuilt with the help of the international community. A new Palestinian governing force must take over – one that renounces terrorism and accepts Israel’s sovereignty. Israel will have to reverse its annexation agenda in the West Bank and accept Palestinian
national aspirations. The sides will have to negotiate a two-state solution that promises peace and security for both peoples.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 17px; font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">It's a very tall order but one worth striving for through every means available. Otherwise, it will only be a matter of time before another, perhaps even
more horrific, cycle of violence begins.</span></p>
