HI all

The popes encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si:
On Caring for Our Home, has made two marvelous
contributions to our World View.

it establishes the human roots of the ecological
crisis as arising from the technocratic paradigm.

it begins to explore a vision of integral ecology.

In my reflection, I wish to briefly explain how Francis'
teaching on integral ecology is applicable to conflict
within our society today. In the near future I wish to
develop this reflection into a longer essay.

Following the reflection I am also including a link to
Quantum Information Panpsychism Explained. Quantum
physicist Federico Faggin explains a beautiful postulate
of quantum theory that places consciousness and
spirituality at the center of scientific investigation.
It provides a framework for understanding resurrection and
our role in the universe as spiritual beings having a
physical experience. It is probably not for everyone but
if you enjoy an intellectual challenge I highly recommend
it.
This Sunday’s gospel provides us with
Luke's version of the beatitudes which some consider to
be more down-to-earth and focused on the physical and
social conditions of the people. For Luke these social
conditions are not static but develop into their
opposite. “blessed are those who are hungry for you will
be satisfied. ... Woe to you who are filled now, for
you will be hungry.” We live in a nation of plenty but
perhaps that can change. Empires come and Empires fall.
Perhaps, if we are of the satisfied we will one day
experience hunger and when hungry we will once again be
satisfied.

Francis’ call for justice is a call for an
Integral Ecology. We need to include the human, social and
the environmental aspect to resolve the contemporary
crisis described in the beatitudes.

139. ...It is essential to seek
comprehensive solutions which consider the interactions
within natural systems themselves and with social systems.
We are faced not with two separate crises, one
environmental and the other social, but rather with one
complex crisis which is both social and environmental.
Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to
combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and
at the same time protecting nature. (Laudato Si)

Many philosophers including Teilard de
Chardin believe that we are evolving to a higher level of
consciousness and understanding. Abraham Maslow says that
we are building on the shoulders of the giants that went
before us. As we increase in understanding we need a more
nuanced explanation of our role in the world. The study of
this process of becoming more conscious and understanding
is called integral theory.

Our society and Catholicism is increasingly
being polarized by different narratives given to the
crisis we face. Authoritarian measures to mitigate
perceived environmental and health threats may give little
attention to their effect on individuals. Champions of
rights and freedoms may not give due consideration to
environmental concerns and other concerns requiring
collective action. The resulting narratives seem to be at
war with each other. This conflict is aggravated by the
interest of the most wealthy and powerful who use their
ownership of media channels to keep society divided.

One concept used in Laudato Si that has
contributed to this polarization is the concept of the
common good. It’s contribution to polarization in our
society is largely do to a misunderstanding of Francis’
definition. Pope Francis describes the common good as:

157. Underlying the principle of the common
good is respect for the human person as such, endowed with
basic and inalienable rights ordered to his or her
integral development. It has also to do with the overall
welfare of society and the development of a variety of
intermediate groups, applying the principle of
subsidiarity. Outstanding among those groups is the
family, as the basic cell of society.(Laudato Si)

The common good begins with respect for the
human person and extends outward to the group. Key to
understanding the common good in the eyes of Francis is
the principle of Subsidiarity. Which gives precedence to
the authority of the family over the authority of
globalist institutions.

During the pandemic the basic right to
refuse experimental medical treatment was denied to
support what we now know to be a massive
fraud by Big Pharma. Other rights too were violated
to enforce top-down authoritative pandemic measures around
the world. This has enhanced a division among people of
good will between those who resisted the narrative of the
authorities and those who did not question that authority.
This division continues to this day and has been
politicized along party lines. .

It doesn’t have to be this way. We can
choose to listen to the other. This is the remedy to the
crisis proposed in Integral Theory. By listening and
understanding the other we can begin to see the world from
the perspective of the other in addition to our own and
transcend this polarization. We progress to a new stage of
consciousness.
