Thanks Helena. Thinking of prophetic messages, or people, a couple of people came to mind who are totally OUTSIDE the religious sphere. Two extremely different short videos that resonated with me anyway.

One of them is Kim Nam-joon (aka RM, frontman for the band BTS) who gave a very moving address to the United Nations a few years ago on the importance of young people learning to love themselves and the work BTS is doing with UNICEF to campaign against violence on children and young people. I mention this because, as we always say, the future of the Church is with young people and it is important that they see and hear messages of hope and positivity from their peers. They have to see that they have a voice in the world and the Church. I hope the ongoing Synod really addresses young people and listens to their voice. Anyway, here is the link for Kim’s very moving speech- https://youtu.be/ZhJ-LAQ6e_Y?si=kPePtyNs6kwyG7T5

The second person who at times can be prophetic is the irreverent, liberal, atheist, political comedian, Bill Maher. He did a monologue a couple of years ago about revolution and change specifically addressing the danger of intolerance and cancel culture often prevalent among those desiring societal change. As I mentioned in my homily this morning, Pope Leo says “Peace is built in the heart and from the heart, by eliminating pride and vindictiveness.” (Address to members of the diplomatic corps, May 16, 2025). I think Bill Maher (as much as he despises “church”) would actually agree with Pope Leo on the importance of change coming from within each of us rather than being “imposed” by the Left or the Right. This clip from Bill is a bit irreverent but funny too (in my humble opinion). Keep in mind, he gave this monologue in 2019 before Trump’s re-election. As a Democrat, Bill takes on his own party and excoriates the Left, but of course most of his criticism these days is reserved for the Right - Trump & MAGA. So you have to view this clip in the context of the time he posted it. https://youtu.be/yysKhJ1U-vM?si=NRnFuY32qm8kQPT4

Sent from Gmail Mobile

On Sun, Nov 9, 2025 at 2:52 PM Helena Burnstein via Sundaycommunity <sundaycommunity@lists.integralshift.ca> wrote:

Re my invitation in PP to consider, “Who are prophetic voices in our world for you?”
Because we were a small group today, and also because I hadn’t written that we would be asked to share responses during our liturgy, I am inviting/welcoming email responses to anyone who wishes to share.
Looking forward…..
