I was going to mention this at the Zoom Mass today but there were other issues so I decided to send an email instead.

Last spring I told you about a group that I am now a part of that is trying to urge the Canadian government to appoint a Special Envoy to monitor the treatment of Palestinian Children by Israel, especially those children taken into military detention.  Some of you signed up for the newsletter.

Next weekend actions are taking place across the country to pressure the new government for this Special Envoy.  I'm forwarding the latest newsletter which includes a link to a letter to Melanie Joly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, If you sign and send this letter, please cc your MP.  You are also encouraged to ask your networks to sign this letter as well.

Along with this action, you are also encouraged to visit your MP to discuss this issue.  Links to Talking Points and Points to Consider before visiting your MP are included in the newsletter.  One hope is that your MP would be willing to be an advocate in Parliament for the initiative of the Special Envoy.  This is one idea that Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, MP for the Beaches in Toronto, suggested.

If you are able to visit your MP, please let me know and I'll send the information to members of CSUFPCR.  Also if you live in or will be in Kitchener or London next weekend, groups there are planning actions about this issue.

I have other information including a brochure that can be handed out to your MP's or others.  I've attached the brochure.

Also, yesterday the No Way to Treat a Children group had the initial screening of the documentary "Caging Children", which tells the stories of 3 youth in Palestine who were arrested and held in Military Detention.  It is very powerful.  I will have links to the documentary and Q&A in the next few days and can send them to you.

We now have a new Foreign Affairs Minister, Melanie Joly from Montreal and I hope you are prepared to educate her on the situation of Palestinian children and to help her as she begins her new role.
Take Action
We want to ask you to take a further step.  In addition to sending a letter to Mme Joly and your MP, would you consider visiting your MP either in person or by zoom?  We are embarking on a national campaign to educate MPs about the treatment of Palestinian children and to ask them to become advocates for the appointment by the Canadian government of a special envoy to investigate and report back on what is happening.

Also in some places groups of people are planning to hold a public presence in a visible part of town.  These will be taking place November 27, 28 or 29th.  People will offer brochures to passersby, try to engage people in conversation and have placards showing Palestinian children.  These placards could also be put in your church – or outside your church!  I particularly like the ones that say “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “Alive!”

Twenty people from across Canada make up the planning team for this campaign. The planning team come from a variety of backgrounds including several different church denominations. The campaign is open to anyone who wants to take action for the rights of Palestinian children. The campaign started with a parliamentary e-petition 2667 in October 2020.
