[Sundaycommunity] death rates from covid in UK by vaccine status very different from what is reported in Canada.

Hi Arthur

I hesitate to wade in because this seems like a highly volatile topic but
I'm concerned you and maybe others are being misled. I agree with
Randolphe's points but have a few more to add.

The article you referenced earlier was not peer reviewed, and the author is
not a doctor. An exercise physiologist is not qualified to give medical
advice professionally. Scrolling the internet for a few hours before
writing a non-peer reviewed piece for an internet site with no journalistic
standards does not constitute research regardless of how the author
describes it.

The article also begins with the argument, now moot, that the vaccines
aren’t FDA approved. Now they are, so hopefully said author is vaccinated
and has not accidentally killed themselves with the horse medication
Ivermectin that they also so loudly and completely unethically advocate as
a cure. Please, please don’t take medications for horses because someone
on the internet without a medical degree suggests you should. Dear God.
It’s this above all that has prompted me to break silence.

You're also wrong to assume that none of us have cast a critical eye on the
pharmaceutical establishment. It's simply clear that in this case the
value of the vaccine outweighs other factors. As with other medications,
the science is accurate and effective even if we may question the financial
power of the industry (and thus the fact that many poorer nations have not
yet been able to purchase sufficient vaccines for their population.) The
numbers are clear on these vaccines preventing serious illness and death
with little risk. And no, the vaccines will not affect our genes.

I hope everyone who is following this will read the link Roberto sent if
you are wondering about the graphs. Yes, many elderly and
immunocompromised people are still dying from the virus. We have known
from the start that the vaccine is least effective amongst these people
though it does offer some protection. All the more reason for the rest of
us to get vaccinated to protect them (you can see the effectiveness amongst
younger people on the graph). Here’s a sample quote from Roberto’s link
clarifying your UK info: “Despite only making up *29%* of the eligible
population, unvaccinated people make up *48%* of this weeks new cases.”

Chemotherapy is also not always 100% effective in stopping cancer. I hope
we won't stop offering it.

And the totalitarianism charge? We elect people to create and impose laws
that will protect the common good in balance with limits on our own
personal freedoms. This includes seatbelts, stop signs, drivers' licenses
(for which there is a medical test of vision), vaccinations, and countless
other things that we don't think about most of the time. That’s literally
their job and we're in the midst of a hiring season (election). Remember
when smoking laws were implemented? Totalitarianism! We can only imagine
how many lives those laws, not to mention all the required vaccines, have
saved over the years.

Medical requirements for work are also not new. For instance I’m sure many
teachers here will remember the mandatory proof that you were TB free
before beginning work. It lasted into the 90s. Either you showed proof of
BCG vaccine, or you had to have a chest x-ray or skin test. Big deal. It
kept the kids safe.

Finally, I’m not familiar with the group Ruah but I object to any argument
that it would be hypocritical for someone who upholds women’s reproductive
rights to also support a vaccine mandate. Women are unique and have varied
opinions on different issues.

The vaccine mandate is about offering each other freedoms and protections –
to gather, celebrate in person, send our kids to school, receive the
medical care that has been set aside while the medical community has been
overwhelmed by covid care, go out and work, travel, volunteer, worship
together, sing in choirs, care for our mental health – I could go on and
on…. We may also have to wear masks for a while too because we want to
protect the vulnerable for whom the vaccine is less effective. I'm not
saying there isn't sacrifice and even some small risk involved, but it's
worth it. That’s what the beatitudes are all about. And Matthew 25. And,
well, the gospels as a whole really.

I appreciate your passion about this Arthur. You've expressed your views
on the vaccine, and I have too along with others so maybe we bow out and
let others converse about it if they want? I just hope anyone here who
might be debating the issue, or has fears, or who has come across
misinformation, will go out and talk to your medical doctor about it.

Best,

Cathy
