About this presentation:
Overwhelming scientific evidence of global warming, species extinction,
water and ocean acidification and extreme weather events can foster a kind
of collective despair in us, in which the future seems like a
death-sentence. This can lead to social disintegration and paralysis.

During his presentation, Dr. Scharper will propose that we consider our
ecological crisis to be a diagnostic moment that requires strategies and
solutions for a more salutary future. He will show us how to embrace a
new way of being together: a re-examination of our humanness at the species
level, inseparably related to and in deep interdependence with the nonhuman
world and live in compassionate relatedness within the biotic community.

About our speaker:
Stephen Bede Scharper is a professor, author, editor, columnist, and public
scholar with a special focus on social justice, sustainability, liberation
theology, worldview and ecology, and environmental ethics. Providing a
unique blend of the scholarly and the accessible in both his teaching and
public speaking, Dr. Scharper has addressed and inspired a wide range of
audiences and remains a much sought-after lecturer. He lives in Toronto
with his wife, anthropologist and novelist Hilary Cunningham, and their son
Nolan, and their cat, Marble. He enjoys drumming and hiking slightly more
than writing.

Currently Director of the Integrated Sustainability Initiative at Trinity
College, he is also associate professor at the School of the Environment
and the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto..
He also serves as adjunct professor at the Toronto School of Theology and
is a Senior Fellow at Massey College. An award-winning journalist, Dr.
Scharper served for over a decade as columnist for The Toronto Star, Canada’s
largest newspaper.
