Dear Catherine,

On the eve of Pope Francis' consistory, where he will create 20 new male
cardinals, Women's Ordination Conference and our partners in mischief,
Women's Ordination Worldwide, made our presence known. While the Vatican
attempts to keep women in the shadows, our international delegation shined
many a bright light on one of the greatest cons-in-history: the exclusion
of women from ordained ministry.

As you might imagine, we attracted a bit of attention in St. Peter's
Square. Within a minute the Italian polizia rolled in to see what was going
on... but perhaps the heat of a deep August night in Rome (or some latent
solidarity?), their hearts were not in it—and we twinkled away after a
short "conversation."


For the next few days the spotlight will truly be on the consistory and the
closed door meeting of the world's cardinals, where they are to discuss
Pope Francis' reforms of the curia and his new apostolic constitution.


We cannot emphasize this enough: Zero women were invited. Zero women will
be in the room. Zero women will join the college of cardinals. Zero women
will be eligible to elect the next pope. And zero women will be in dialogue
with the cardinals about the new constitution that now allows women to head
dicasteries, a role traditionally reserved for cardinals and bishops.


Nevertheless, despite the lack of women at the extraordinary
consistory, extraordinary
women are here! And we've got a message: SEXISM is a cardinal sin. And
well, this little light of ours... we're going to let it shine, shine,
shine.

Women cardinals?


"Theologically and theoretically, it is possible." — Fr. Federico Lombardi,

While canon law currently specifies that a cardinal must either be a priest
or a bishop, it could be possible for the church to name women as cardinals
(without changing the church's teaching of reserving ordination to men)*,
as cardinals are not ordained into their ministry. Appointing a lay person
would require a change to, or at least a dispensation from, the law.
