Your monthly roundup of good news for the climate
Dear Catherine,
Another month unfolds, revealing a tapestry of innovation and resilience
that continues to redefine our world.
This month, we explore the transformative power of hemp in battery
technology, the healing potential of curcumin for coral reefs, the waning
influence of fossil fuels, and India's remarkable strides in reducing
emissions.
Let's cherish each advancement, no matter its scale, as we journey toward a
future abundant in sustainable solutions and hope.

Hemp hooray for better batteries
Renewable energy often requires batteries made from mined materials that
can be difficult to recycle. Texas-based Bemp Research has developed a
lithium-sulphur battery made with carbonized hemp instead of heavy metals
such as cobalt and nickel — although it still requires lithium. The
batteries are more lightweight and durable, higher performing and easier to
recycle than lithium-ion batteries.

Curcumin can cure corals
Among other impacts, climate change is bleaching corals, which can kill the
organisms. Coral reefs protect coastlines from natural disasters, preserve
marine biodiversity and are vital to the global economy. Researchers at
Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT and University of Milan-Bicocca found
that curcumin, a natural antioxidant substance extracted from turmeric,
could reduce or prevent coral bleaching without damaging the surrounding
marine environment.

The “beginning of the end” of fossil fuels
Good news for the climate! The International Energy Agency says global oil
and gas demand will start to fall before 2030, marking the “beginning of
the end” of the fossil fuel era. Although “significantly stronger and
faster policy action by governments” is required to “put the world on a
path to limiting global warming to 1.5°C,” it’s at least a sign that change
is occurring.

India’s plunge in emissions marks a new climate era
India has successfully reduced its rate of greenhouse gas emissions by 33
per cent in the span of 14 years, outpacing initial projections.
This accelerated decline is attributed to a surge in renewable energy
production and increased forest cover, say officials who have reviewed the
most recent assessment prepared for the United Nations.
