Your monthly roundup of good news for the climate

Dear Catherine,

This month, more new inventions and innovations show the promise of a
brighter, sustainable future.

Hot air balloons are being revived as eco-friendly travel options. The
World Energy Outlook is optimistic. Ultrasound is breaking ground on
degrading "forever chemicals.” And falsehoods about heat pump efficiency in
cold climates are getting debunked.

Let's take a moment to appreciate each positive stride, as we continue to
pave the way toward a future filled with solutions and hope.

Slow down, you don’t need to burn gas!

When Jules Verne’s novel *Around the World in 80 Days* was published in
1872, the idea that people could circumnavigate the globe in a hot air
balloon was considered science fiction. With our fast-paced lifestyles, we
now burn enormous amounts of polluting, climate-altering fuel to zip
between continents in hours rather than days. But a European team is going
back to the balloon, albeit one powered by solar panels and hydrogen fuel
cells. And they plan to make their 2026 non-stop trip around the equator in
20 days!

World Energy Outlook envisions brighter future

The International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook 2023 is full of good
climate news. It shows that by 2030, almost half of global electricity
supply will be from renewable energy, 10 times as many electric vehicles
will be on the road, heat pumps and other electric systems will outsell oil
and gas boilers, and investments in new offshore wind projects will be
three times higher than in coal and gas plants. The IEA cautions that more
needs to be done, but the renewable energy revolution is “unstoppable!”

A sound method to remove “forever chemicals”

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were considered a
breakthrough when they were developed almost 100 years ago — used in
everything from cookware to clothing to personal care products. Now, we
know they’re a difficult-to-break-down pollutant linked to human health
problems and pollution. Researchers at Ohio State University recently
discovered that the chemicals can be degraded using ultrasound.

Yes, heat pumps work in cold climates!

Fossil fuel supporters often say heat pumps don’t work in cold places. Tell
that to the people in Nordic countries! Norway, Finland and Sweden have the
most heat pumps per capita. Technological advances mean modern heat pumps
work efficiently in cold climates and in old buildings. They’re an
important climate solution, as heating generates around four billion tonnes
of carbon dioxide per year, or eight per cent of global emissions.
