This is from a friend. It’s really worth the read and if you’re so inclined
please sigh the letter. Thanks, Catherine
Dear Petrocultures Research Group,
I’m reaching out to you at the recommendation of Imre Szeman, who thought
this effort may be of interest to this group.
I’m a postdoc at the University of Waterloo who works at the intersection
of mining, climate change, and health. Isaiah Ritzmann is with Kitchener
Ontario’s Working Centre, where part of his work is in the area of climate
change education. Together, we have been working on an issue of concern to
us both – Energy Descent. This idea recognizes that while the energy
transition is essential as we face a changing climate, it's not sufficient.
As you know with all the work you do through Petrocultures, extractivism is
not benign. Isaiah and I, with some great support, have been working on
this idea for a while now, and the output is a public, signable letter
advocating for Energy Descent, and urging public conversation about the
issue.
We're now in the process of collecting other people's feedback and
re-writing the letter.
The draft can be seen - and *signed *- here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScMD5umMD-P49qY_ENdMWfAuIBfkytgvVqtXTsBhZW-c275Sg/viewform?usp=sf_link>.
We plan to publish it online by Earth Day. Resilience.org has agreed to
publish it!
The goal is to raise attention and start conversations about preparing for
a future with less energy.
1.* We would love it if you would add your name to our letter!* No pressure
at all of course. Signatures will go public by Earth Day. It will be
possible for others to add their signatures after that.
2. If you know anyone in your circles - journalists, energy pundits,
activists, concerned citizens - who you think would be willing to sign, or
at least would value reading the letter, *please share with them as well.*
With thanks,
Lesley and Isaiah
