[Craic] Jordan Peterson, the Climate Crisis Deniers’ New Mouthpiece | The Tyee

Hi Art;

From my perspective, it is already too late to deny the fact that climate change is happening.
We discussed this topic in Geomorphology 101 when I was an undergraduate. Our soils classes not only taught us how soils are different, but how they can change over time due to climatic influences.

If one does not believe the “science”, there is also plenty of anecdotal evidence: fires / floods / thawing permafrost / shifting climatic zones / desertification / etc. Stories are just as valid as theoretical models - as we know from reading the Gospels.

My family are farmers and they can tell stories of, for example, how much the date of the first frost has changed in the past 50 years.
When I first visited P.E.I. in 1971 they did not grow corn as fodder for their dairy herds. Now, every dairy farm grows corn AND climate change is one of two factors involved in this. The other factor involved is genetic science, which has enabled corn to mature in a shorter growing season.

Are there anthropological causes of these changes in Earth’s climate?
That debate is over with for most people, BUT I recognize that not everyone agrees.
Even so, what if we all were to co-operate and reduce human-caused carbon inputs to the seas and atmosphere of the Earth?
Would there be any harm in doing so?

In our United Church of Canada “New Creed” (below) we not only affirm our belief in an evolving creation, we also affirm that one role for the church is to:
“Live with respect in creation”.
First Nations people also have respect for Earth as a part of their spirituality.

Since all of life on Earth is inter-connected, our actions in reducing our impact on Earth will mean positive outcomes for everyone, no? That’s why I am involved in environmental action groups, and have little interest in debating who is right, or wrong.

Stay hopeful;
Allan

We are not alone,
    we live in God’s world.
 We believe in God:
    who has created and is creating,
    who has come in Jesus,
       the Word made flesh,
       to reconcile and make new,
    who works in us and others
       by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church:
    to celebrate God’s presence,
    to live with respect in Creation,
    to love and serve others,
    to seek justice and resist evil,
    to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
       our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
    God is with us.
We are not alone.
    Thanks be to God.

Its not what we say that causes environmental destruction it is what we do. I think that our biggest concern at present should be the social Darwinist inclinations of the billionaire class.
